What are the first signs of tinnitus?

Tinnitus is commonly characterized as a ringing or buzzing in the ears. In most instances, only the tinnitus patient can hear the sounds. This is why tinnitus is sometimes referred to as “phantom noise.”

The frequency and intensity of tinnitus vary. An estimated 50 million Americans experience sporadic episodes of tinnitus, according to the American Tinnitus Association.

Numerous factors can lead to tinnitus, but exposure to loud noise over an extended length of time is the most frequent cause. In this situation, hearing loss may also be present together with tinnitus.

Hearing noises that aren’t there?

Some persons diagnosed with tinnitus may hear sounds that resemble music or singing, while others may perceive sounds that match their heartbeat.

Aside from the common “ringing in the ears,” tinnitus may also manifest in the following sounds:

  • Buzzing
  • Humming
  • Grinding
  • Hissing
  • Whistling

The severity of tinnitus may vary from one person to another. One might find tinnitus to be mild and bearable, while others may experience severe tinnitus to the point of not being able to sleep at night or concentrate on their daily activities.

How do you check if you have tinnitus?

There are several tests that can help diagnose tinnitus. A visit to an audiologist is one of the first steps you can take.

A hearing test may be performed to check if your hearing is normal. If we find some abnormalities with your hearing, you may have a combination of tinnitus and hearing loss. In this case, you may be prescribed hearing aids that have tinnitus-friendly features.

Further tests may be required such as imaging tests and blood tests. These additional tests may be deemed necessary for individuals who are complaining of pulsating sounds that seem to be in sync with their heartbeat.

More medical probing is needed with this kind of tinnitus because it may be a red flag for a more serious medical condition. Heart problems, blood pressure issues, anemia, or diabetes, are medical conditions that may trigger pulsatile tinnitus.
